Coming fresh off a release in New York City, Omega is here to show a brand new case style to the popular Planet Ocean line â that of a fully ceramic diver with GMT function! It sounds simple enough, but Omega has a few new little traits here that they say separate the Planet Ocean Deep Black, as the collection is being called, from its competition.
The entire Planet Ocean Deep Black line is a large 45.5 mm in diameter. They are all built from a single block of ceramic, and feature helium escape valves at 10 o’clock. Inside, you’ll find the excellent OMEGA Master Chronometer caliber 8906. As you may remember, all Master Chronometer movements pass eight tests set forth by METAS, and are resistant to an incredible 15,000 gauss. So you have an anti-magnetic movement with COSC accuracy, and a four year warranty.
What’s interesting here is Omega has designed a new system of locking the case back to ensure that all the engravings on the rear of the watch stay oriented correctly â they call it a ceramic Naiad locking system. It is, of course, patented. (A quick look through the various patent databases turned up what looks like the relevant patent â basically it’s for a locking system for a screw-down case back that allows you to orient decorative elements on the case back, such as engravings, in proper alignment without having to match a given case back to a given case; if you’re curious you can take a look right here. The word “naiad” is Greek and refers to mythological water spirits.)
Rubber has been blended with ceramic to create special black bezels â on the colored models, you will find the first 15 minutes in blue or red Liquidmetal. The “He” on the helium escape valve will match as well. The fully ceramic watches â that’s the case, dial, and bezel â have brush finished cases and dials in the colored examples, while they are polished in the all black and Ceragold models. You will also notice the GMT scale on the rehaut of all four watches, making this an interesting combination of complications and materials.
Each strap on the Planet Ocean Deep Black is rubber, though designed to look as if they are fabric with contrast stitching, and a wave pattern found on the underside. They are all treated with an anti-bacterial coating, and all clasps are ceramic-covered titanium.
The one watch with SednaGold accents will come on a leather strap and features matching gold hands and indexes â they will emit blue and green colors. The pricing of the fully ceramic watches has been set at 10,400 CHF, while the gold accented piece will be 13,900 CHF. U.S. pricing has not yet been set, nor has availability.
