The newest version of the Omega Seamaster Railmaster features a vertically brushed dial that has been made to resemble denim, with an options strap actually made from the material to complete the look. While denim seems like a perfectly natural style choice, incorporating one of the most versatile fabrics ever, Omega says this material is actually a specific nod to the historical origins of the Railmaster itself. On the railroads, farms, and factory floors – places in which the hard-working, anti-magnetic watch was intended to be worn – working people routinely encountered machinery that might magnetize certain other watches. And in many cases, these workers would have been wearing denim.
The Seamaster Railmaster, of course, isn’t a new watch. We’ve already covered it extensively here on the site, including in A Week On The Wrist. This new iteration is technically identical to the watch reviewed there, it just offers a new aesthetic twist that expresses the core principles of the watch a little bit differently.
While the combination of a steel wristwatch with denim accents isn’t totally novel (TAG Heuer and Hublot have also incorporated denim into timepieces in the past), Omega’s has tied the material (in the case of the strap) and look (in the case of the dial) to the history of the Railmaster. As marketing stories go, this feels a little on the thin side, but I will say that the dial in particular looks really good. If you’re after the ultimate wristwatch to pair with a Texas tuxedo, then the denim strap is the clear winner. But if you want a subtler watch that will look great without turning heads, go with the bracelet, which Stephen has called out for being particularly well made while adding “hundreds of dollars of value” to the watch at large.
