Introducing: The Parmigiani Tonda 1950 Set Galaxy, And Tonda 1950 Météorite Cold North Special Edition

Parmigiani Fleurier’s Tonda 1950 watches are the simplest of the 1950 family (a subset of the Tonda collection) and offer a number of different dial treatments for this range of simple, flat, elegant watches, which have in common the micro-rotor caliber PF701 (caliber PF701 is quite slim, at 30mm x 2.6mm, and has a platinum micro-rotor). Recently the Tonda 1950 has been offered with a meteorite dial, in either “abyss blue” or “black nickel” – and now in white, for the first time. At the same time as this version was announced, Parmigiani Fleurier also announced an aventurine glass-dial version, with a gem set bezel.

As with the other meteorite dial versions, the raw meteorite is cut and treated in a series of acid baths, to enhance its natural crystal structure. The dial is then given a galvanic surface coating. This is the first time that a Tonda 1950 Météorite has been offered in a titanium case, as well, and Parmigiani is also releasing new versions of the abyss blue and black nickel models – also with titanium cases.

The dimensions remain the same, at 39mm x 7.97mm, and price at launch is $19,500 (down from $20,500 for the rose gold version of the abyss blue Météorite).

The Tonda 1950 Set Galaxy is also driven by caliber PF702, and is only slightly thicker than the Météorite versions, at 39mm x 8.4mm. In this instance, the aventurine used is aventurine glass, rather than the mineral aventurine, which is a type of quartz. As it turns out, this is an example of an imitation giving its name to the original substance – aventurine glass was discovered by accident, in the famous glass-blowing center of Murano (a group of closely linked islands just north of Venice) in the 18th century. The name comes from the Italian, per avventura, which means “by chance.” The case is rose gold, and the bezel is set with 84 diamonds. Price at launch is $23,900.

The Tonda 1950 Set Galaxy: case, rose gold, 39mm x 8.4mm, 30m water resistant; bezel set with 84 diamonds totalling 0.6460 carats. Dial, blue aventurine glass with 18k rose gold indices. Movement, PF702, 30mm x 2.6mm, running at 21,600 vph in 29 jewels; 48 hour power reserve. The Tonda 1950 Météorite Cold North special edition: movement, caliber PF702 as well; case in titanium, at 39mm x 7.97mm, and 30m water resistance. Straps by Hermès.
