When we look back over 10 years of HODINKEE stories, there are a few that stand out against the thousands of others as defining who we are and what we do. This story is one of those. Back in the summer of 2014, Ben visited Jean-Claude Biver at his home outside Montreaux, Switzerland, and sat down with the industry titan to talk about his own personal collection of watches. You see, in addition to running Hublot, TAG Heuer, and Zenith (and having played major roles at Omega, Blancpain, and countless other watchmakers over the years), Biver is a die-hard collector of both modern and vintage watches.
Biver walks Ben through a dizzying collection of watches that includes everything from grand complication pocket watches to an original Patek Philippe Nautilus and the very first modern Blancpain minute repeater to a pink-on-pink reference 1518 perpetual calendar chronograph. Yeah, this is the good stuff. In addition, he offers insights into the history of the watch industry that only he can provide. If you haven’t seen and read this one yet, stop what you’re doing and check it out right now. And if you have seen it before? Watch it again, obviously.
