When you think of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, you almost certainly conjure up a stainless steel watch with a rich blue dial in your mind’s eye. Yes, Gerald Genta’s 1972 classic was originally envisioned as a steel watch through and through, and yes, the original Jumbo (and its modern counterpart, the ref. 15202) is just as awesome today as it was 46 years ago, but there are other Royal Oak models that deserve just as much love. I’m not talking about complicated renditions, or even the beloved Offshore. No, I’m talking about that same classic Jumbo, just rendered in rich 18k yellow gold. Trust me, if you’re sleeping on this one, you’re really, truly sleeping.
Now, for our money, if you’re going to go gold here you should go all the way and get the version of this watch with a matching solid gold dial. It gives the watch a seamlessness and coherence that is just incredible. Put it on your wrist and try not to smile – I dare you. If you want to tone things down a bit though you can opt for a deep blue Tapisserie dial instead. It’s every bit as good looking, just in a very different way. As you’d expect, both versions have matching date discs, so the color scheme remains unbroken top to bottom. Sure, either way you go this is a watch that requires some confidence to pull off, but if any wristwatch can give you that extra boost or put a little swagger in your step, this, my friends, is it.
