Last night’s episode of the Amazon series The Grand Tour featured some primo watch spotting cloaked in a healthy dose of dry humor. In a segment in which the show’s three co-hosts presented holiday gifts to one another, Jeremy Clarkson handed the mangled Rolex Sea-Dweller you see below to Richard Hammond. The watch, Hammond’s own, survived a fiery car crash over the summer in Switzerland.
The car that Hammond was driving at the time of the crash was the electrically powered Rimac Concept One, a Croatian-made two-seat super car that reaches speeds in excess of 220 mph, albeit with a range of only about 200 miles. Hammond was filming an episode for the second season of the show when he crashed.
As you can see in the photo above and the video below, the incident was extremely serious. Hammond is lucky to have escaped with his life.
But one thing about The Grand Tour that pretty much anyone who’s seen the show can attest to is that nothing gets a pass from the hosts’ extremely dry British sense of humor (or is it humour?). Clarkson presented the watch in the below plastic case, which reads “Made in Switzerland: Carefully perfected on 10th June 2017 by the British.” Classic.
Perhaps the best part of the segment comes when Clarkson notes that the watch is still working while handing it to Hammond. We knew that Rolex makes a tough watch, but wow.
