Wildland – PBS

Over two years, filmmakers Alex Jablonski and Kahlil Hudson documented the lives of firefighters in southern Oregon, from initial hiring and training to the grueling work of fighting wildfires. The characters are fascinating, their stories are wonderfully “human,” and the film itself is beautifully shot and edited. Don’t miss this.

6 Cinematographers Who Took Cues From Famous Painters, From Caravaggio To Hopper – Artsy

To paint a moving picture with light – that is the work of a cinematographer. It’s no surprise that some of the best directors of photography reference lighting techniques and visual elements from history’s most masterful painters – from lighting sources, to intensity and color temperature, to mise en scene. There are a trove of videos I love to research from time to time that reference shot by shot comparisons of films and classic paintings, and this article provides a nice introduction into some well-known examples of film depicting art. While you’re at it, please leave a comment below if you have a favorite cinematographer whose work you love.

Recently, CBD seems to be popping up everywhere you look – in lattes, juices, skincare, vape pens, and more. It’s said to treat a host of things, from anxiety to inflammation to cancer, and even non-weed smokers are being swayed. Here, Alex Williams outlines the sudden rise of CBD and investigates whether it is really a “magical elixir” or just the latest fad.

FUN! – Vince Staples

Vince Staples’ new album FM dropped this past week and he released this visual treatment of the standout single, FUN. The twist? The entire video takes place inside Google Maps – or at least a very convincing recreation of its user interface. Seemingly from the vantage of the “Google Maps truck,” the viewer is taken on a journey through Staples’ native North Long Beach, California, to witness some of the hardship and destitution the rapper so frequently relays in his rhymes. A plot twist at the end of the video reveals what the video ultimately is: an examination of how modern technology can mediate the distance between social groups and the consequent moral implications of that mediation.
