FAQ: Selling Platinum Jewelry in Winston-Salem

Platinum finger ring with diamond, Apex Gold Silver Coin Winston-Salem

People bring in platinum rings, chains, and broken pieces and ask the same few questions. Here are plain answers from Apex Gold Silver Coin at 605 Walnut St SW in Winston-Salem about selling platinum jewelry. Quick note up front: we do not offer appraisals. We look at your marked platinum and make a buy offer, and we explain that offer on the spot.

Do you buy platinum jewelry?

Yes. We buy marked platinum jewelry and platinum scrap we can use—rings, chains, bracelets, earrings, and broken or unfinished pieces. Offers are based on the day’s platinum spot price, the purity mark, and the weight of the platinum itself. If something is not marked or we cannot confirm it is platinum, we will say so instead of guessing.

How can I tell if my jewelry is platinum?

Look for hallmarks such as PT, PLAT, 950, 900, or 850. Those marks tell you the piece is platinum (or a platinum alloy at that purity). Stamps can wear off over time, so bring the piece in even if the mark is faint—we will check it. Do not scratch or grind the piece yourself to “prove” it.

Is white gold the same as platinum?

No. White gold is gold alloyed and often rhodium-plated so it looks bright white. Platinum is a different metal. White gold is usually stamped 10K, 14K, or 18K (or 417, 585, 750). Platinum is stamped PT, PLAT, 950, 900, or 850. We buy both, but they are priced as different metals. For karat gold jewelry, see our guide to selling 10K, 14K, and 18K gold jewelry in Winston-Salem.

How do you price platinum?

We buy platinum as platinum—spot-based on marked pieces we can use. We weigh the metal, confirm the mark and purity, and make an offer from there. We do not invent a fixed “% of melt” number on the website for platinum the way we talk about scrap gold. You get a clear offer when we see the piece.

What about diamonds and other stones in platinum settings?

Diamonds and other gemstones are separate from the metal buy. We buy the marked platinum. Stones may be removed, set aside, or handled separately depending on what you want and what we can use. Tell us up front if you want to keep any stones. We do not appraise diamonds as a jewelry appraisal service.

Do you buy broken, bent, or unfinished platinum pieces?

Yes, when they are marked platinum we can use. Bent rings, broken chains, and scrap from a repair bench are common walk-ins. Condition of the jewelry as wearable fashion does not matter for a scrap buy—what matters is that it is real marked platinum.

Do you buy platinum dental or industrial scrap?

We focus on jewelry and jewelry scrap with clear platinum marks. If you have something unusual, bring it in or call and ask. We will tell you honestly whether we can buy it.

How do you test platinum?

We check hallmarks first, then use the shop’s testing methods for precious metals. Platinum is not tested the same way as every karat of gold, but the goal is the same: confirm what you have before we make an offer. For how we approach scrap gold testing in general, see our FAQ on how we test scrap gold in Winston-Salem.

Should I clean or polish my platinum before I sell?

No need. Bring it as it is. Heavy cleaning, grinding, or stripping stones yourself can make testing harder and is not required for a buy offer. Leave the piece alone and let us handle it at the counter.

What do I need to bring, and do I need an appointment?

Bring your platinum jewelry and a government-issued photo ID. No appointment is needed. Walk-ins are welcome during shop hours. Tania runs the counter day to day, and Jeff is the owner.

If your platinum came from an estate along with gold coins or scrap gold, our guide to gold coins vs scrap gold in Winston-Salem explains how those categories differ. For general selling questions, see our FAQ on selling gold and silver in Winston-Salem.

Do you appraise platinum jewelry?

No. We do not offer appraisals. We look at your marked platinum and make a buy offer, and we explain how we got there. If you decide not to sell, that is fine.
