Selling on Facebook Marketplace: Safety Tips
Selling gold, silver, coins or watches on Facebook Marketplace means meeting a stranger with something valuable. A few simple habits make it much safer.
Where to meet
- A police station. Many police departments have safe exchange zones in the lobby or parking lot. Call your local department to ask.
- A busy public place like Hanes Mall, or another safe, well-lit spot with security cameras and people around.
- Never meet at your home or theirs, and never share your home address.
How to meet
- Bring a friend. Don’t go alone.
- Meet in daylight.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
- Keep the meeting short. Don’t get into a stranger’s car.
Getting paid
- Cash: count it in front of the buyer and watch for counterfeit bills. Large bills deserve a close look.
- Payment apps: payments can be reversed or faked. Screenshots of a “payment” are not payment.
- Overpayment scams: a buyer “accidentally” sends too much and asks for the difference back. Don’t send money back.
- Shipping scams: be wary of buyers who want you to ship to someone else, or who send links asking for your account details.
Trust your gut. If a buyer pushes, rushes or changes the plan, walk away.
