What a Fair Offer Looks Like When Selling an Estate Collection

Selling an estate collection is often a one-time event, and it can feel overwhelming. A fair offer is one you can understand. These are good questions to ask any buyer.

Questions to ask

  • Is the offer itemized? You should be able to see what each group of items is worth, not just one lump number.
  • Is it based on weight, purity and current spot? Gold and silver offers should start from the weight, the purity (karat or fineness) and the day’s market price.
  • What percent of melt is it? Ask what share of the metal value you are being paid. For scrap gold, offers are often around 75% of melt.
  • Are coins and collectibles separated from scrap? Silver dollars, gold coins and other collectibles should be looked at on their own, not tossed in with scrap.
  • How is testing done? Testing should happen in front of you, so you see what is tested and the results.
  • How will you be paid? Ask about the payment method and when you get the money.
  • Are there any fees? Ask if anything is taken out, such as testing, processing or commission.
A buyer who rushes you or won’t explain the numbers is a reason to slow down. A fair buyer is happy to walk you through the offer.
