How to Spot a Fake Rolex

Counterfeit Rolex watches keep getting better, so no single check proves a watch is real. These are general warning signs. If anything looks off, bring the watch in and we’ll check it in front of you.

Common warning signs

  • Weight. A genuine Rolex in steel or gold feels solid and dense. A light, hollow feel is a red flag.
  • Second-hand sweep. Rolex automatic movements move in a smooth, fast sweep. A hand that jumps once per second usually means a quartz movement.
  • Cyclops. The date magnifier on genuine models enlarges the date strongly so it fills the window. A weak or off-center magnification is a warning sign.
  • Rehaut engraving. On newer models, the inner ring of the dial is engraved “ROLEX” repeatedly, crisp and aligned with the minute markers.
  • Case back. Most Rolex models have a plain, solid case back. A clear back showing the movement, or busy engraving, is a warning sign on most models.
  • Crown. The crown logo on the winding crown should be sharp and well defined, and the crown should screw down smoothly on models that have one.
  • Serial and reference numbers. They should be finely engraved, not etched or stamped roughly, and should match the papers.
  • Dial printing. Text should be sharp and evenly spaced with no smudges, spelling mistakes or uneven markers.
  • Bracelet and clasp. Solid links, a precise clasp with a crisp crown logo, and smooth, tight fit. Rattly or rough-edged links are a warning sign.
Rolex itself says new watches should be bought only from Official Rolex Retailers (see the Rolex watch care FAQ). For vintage pieces, Hodinkee’s guide to checking a vintage Rolex is a helpful read, and U.S. Customs explains the risks of counterfeits at Fake Goods, Real Dangers. These signs are general. A good fake can pass some of them, and a real watch can show wear or service parts. We make no promises from a description or photos. Bring it in to have it checked.
