How to Use a Sigma Metalytics Precious Metal Verifier

Sigma Metalytics Precious Metal Verifiers are electronic testers used by collectors and buyers to check gold, silver, platinum and palladium without scratching or acid. This is a plain-language overview. Always follow the manual that comes with your device.

What it does

  • It tests a sample’s resistivity, an electrical property that differs from metal to metal. Sigma Metalytics says the sensor makes a very small electromagnetic field and measures how the sample changes it, then compares that to a genuine sample of the selected metal.
  • It is non-destructive: no scratching, filing or acid.
  • Sigma Metalytics says it can test through plastic cases, holders, flips and assay packs, as long as there is no metal in the packaging.
  • Sigma Metalytics says the signal goes under the surface to help catch plating and hidden inserts.
  • Optional wands are used for bars, small coins and samples that won’t sit on the main sensor.

Basic steps

  • Turn the device on. If you are using a wand, connect it.
  • Clear everything off the sensor (and keep a wand away from metal) and let it calibrate.
  • Choose the metal or coin you expect it to be, such as a gold alloy, a silver coin type or a bullion purity.
  • Place the sample on the sensor, or touch the wand to the sample.
  • Read the result. A reading in the expected range means the sample is consistent with that metal.

Tips

  • The sample has to fully cover the sensor or the face of the wand. Use the right sensor size.
  • Very thin samples, very thick cases and deeply stamped designs can throw off a reading. Test on a flat area.
  • Use it along with other checks: weight, size, markings and where the piece came from.
