Why Apex Gold Silver Coin No Longer Buys Pennies and Nickels

We get asked about jars of pennies and rolls of nickels all the time, and we understand. Coins like these often come from a family member who saved them for years.

Why we stopped

  • There are essentially no collectors for common pennies and nickels.
  • Their value is so low that we can’t turn a profit buying them, even in large amounts.
  • Sorting and counting them takes time that doesn’t pay off for you or for us.
The one exception: we consider a penny or nickel only if it is a rare date and already graded by an established third-party grading service. That goes for wheat cents, Indian Head and large cents, Buffalo nickels and silver war nickels (1942–1945) too. Common dates and ungraded coins we pass on. See why we only buy graded rare coins.

What you can do instead

  • Use a bank or coin-counting machine. Many banks will count coins for their customers.
  • Keep them. A family coin jar can be a fun keepsake or a way to start a young collector.
  • Spend them. They are still money.
We still welcome silver coins. Silver dimes, quarters and half dollars, silver dollars, gold coins and bullion are all welcome. Not sure what you have? Bring it in and we’ll take a look.
