Scrap gold (jewelry melt)
Scrap is gold that will be melted. Think damaged chains, broken clasps, dental gold, and unmarked pieces we test for karat. On that material we pay about 75% of melt value based on today’s gold price and the karat we confirm in front of you. If a piece is not real gold, we say so. You can check a live spot reference on Kitco’s gold price page before you walk in; we still test and weigh everything on the counter.
Gold coins (usually better than scrap)
Recognizable US gold coins and common bullion coins (American Gold Eagles, Maple Leafs, and similar) are not priced like scrap jewelry. Spot, premium, and condition matter. In most cases, coins pay much higher than the scrap rate because dealers and collectors want the coin itself, not just the melt.
