Make room next to those five NBA MVP trophies, MJ. Yesterday at the White House, Michael Jordan â you know, that guy who won six NBA championships (where he was the Finals MVP in all six), and who is the league’s all-time leader in points per game â was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama. And what did MJ have on his wrist while receiving the nation’s highest civilian honor? That appears to be an IWC Big Pilot Platinum Limited Edition, ref. 5002-02.
This reference was made by IWC in limited numbers, from roughly 2003-2006. Michael Friedberg, the noted IWC historian, has written that the references 5002-02 (blue dial) and 5002-03 (black dial) were made in very small numbers for each year of production, and IWC has never officially released figures on numbers made with blue vs. black dials. The reference 5005-02 was originally announced at Baselworld in 2002.
Other recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom comprised a who’s who of American culture, including Bill and Melinda Gates, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Vin Scully, and Ellen DeGeneres.
